Background:  Sulfatases hydrolyze sulfate esters from sulfated steroids, carbohydrates, proteoglycans and glycolipids. They are involved in hormone biosynthesis, modulation of cell signaling and degradation of macromolecules. Arylsulfatase I, also known as ARSI, is a 569 amino acid secretory protein that belongs to the sulfatase family of proteins. ARSI is expressed in embryonic tissues, retina and a few cancer cell lines. A candidate gene for lysosomal storage diseases, the gene encoding Arylsulfatase I maps to human chromosome 5, which contains 181 million base pairs and comprises nearly 6% of the human genome. Deletion of the p arm of chromosome 5 leads to Cri du chat syndrome, while deletion of the q arm or of chromosome 5 altogether is common in therapy-related acute myelogenous leukemias and myelodysplastic syndrome.
