Background: CHI3L1 belongs to the glycosyl hydrolase 18 family of proteins. It may play an important role in the capacity of cells to respond to and cope with changes in their environment and also may be involved in tissue remodeling and defense against pathogens. CHI3L1 is present in articular chondrocytes, synovial cells as well as in liver. It is not detectable in muscle tissues, lung, pancreas, mononuclear cells, or fibroblasts.
