Background:  MAP3K8 is a member of the serine/threonine protein kinase family. This kinase can activate both the MAP kinase and JNK kinase pathways. MAP3K8 activates IkappaB kinases, and thus induces the nuclear production of NF-kappaB. It also promotes the production of TNF-alpha and IL-2 during T lymphocyte activation. There are two isoforms of MAP3K8: a 58 kDa and a 53 kDa form. The 58 kDa form is activated specifically during the S and G2/M phases of the cell cycle. The longer 58 kDa form undergoes phosphorylation on Ser residues mainly, and the shorter 53 kDa form undergoes phosphorylation on both Ser and Thr residues.
