Background:   The cytochrome P450 proteins (CYPs) are monooxygenases that catalyze reactions involved in both drug metabolism and in the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids and other lipids. P450 enzymes are classified into subfamilies, such as CYP1A and CYP2A, based on their sequence similarities. CYP2C8 (cytochrome P450, family 2, subfamily C, polypeptide 8), CPC8 or MP-12/MP-20, is a 490 amino acid protein that localizes to the membrane of both the endoplasmic reticulum and the microsome and belongs to the cytochrome P450 family. Using heme groups as cofactors, CYP2C8 functions as a heme-thiolate monooxygenase that is involved in NADPH-dependent electron transport and is able to oxidize several compounds, including steroids, fatty acids, and xenobiotics.
